T-Pain's "On Top of the Covers" Album

T-Pain? A covers album? Turn it tf up!

T-Pain just dropped a new album, and it’s not like anything he’s done before.

On March 17, T-Pain released “On Top of the Covers,” a covers album and his second album as an independent artist. The project features the singer’s unique take on classic songs from legendary artists like Sam Cooke, Journey, Frank Sinatra, and more. T-Pain shows off his pure, unfiltered talent by tweaking past hits of different genres with his soulful and raw interpretations, and most importantly, without autotune.

Now, this isn’t the first time T-Pain has showcased his natural voice. Fans, including myself, were all wowed when the “I’m Sprung” singer unleashed his non-autotuned voice during his 2014 NPR Tiny Desk Concert performance. But it wasn’t until after his appearance and win on “The Masked Singer” that he started working on his latest album.  According to T-Pain, he’s been working on the covers album for years. In a press release about “On Top of the Covers,” the singer revealed:

“This covers album has been years in the making. … It got put on hold for a bit, but now that I’m independent, I’m able to do whatever I want to do through Nappy Boy Entertainment and this is something I’ve felt strongly about for a long time. These songs are not what you’d expect when you hear that T-Pain is doing a covers album and that is what I think is cool about it.”

“On Top of the Covers” features an eclectic mix of songs that showcase T-Pain‘s versatility and creativity as an artist. After giving it a listen or three, it’s safe to say that the “Rappa Ternt Sanga” is not just a talented artist with a distinct style and tone, but he also has an exceptional ear for music. On the album, T-Pain incredibly deconstructs legendary songs and rebuilds them in a way that only he can.

From the soulful twist on Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” to the electrifying rendition of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs,” his performances are nothing short of amazing. And don’t even get me started on “Tennessee Whiskey!” He managed to take an already soulful song and elevate it even further with his unique touch. T-Pain truly smashed these songs with his renditions, taking them to a whole new level of soulfulness. 🔥

“Each one of these songs means something to me and helped me fall in love with music at different points in my life,” T-Pain said in an Instagram caption. “I’m releasing this cover album from the view of what I hear when I listen to each song.”
