Remembering Aaliyah, 14 Years Later + Janet Jackson’s Message to Her

by Ashlee Nicole

It’s been 14 years since singer Aaliyah was taken away from us in a tragic plane crash. There are two days of Aaliyah significance that are super dear to me. This day and her birthday (January 16). I was an über fan of Aaliyah since the beginning and, at the time of her death, it hit me hard. I was in my senior year of high school, attending one of the biggest high school football games of the year. I found out when I got home and thought it was a joke. The next morning, I woke up to MTV News’ Kurt Loder saying it was indeed true. I broke down. Such a sweet life taken so soon. Who knows where she’d be in her career, at this moment, if she were still here. Her music lives on and will always be a part of me. RIP, baby girl.

Janet Jackson posted a note she wrote to the late singer earlier on her Twitter:

“What I shared with you ever sacred, everlasting, and it’s pure and it will endure. I love you Aaliyah #RIP”
