History Channel’s newest miniseries “ROOTS” will be airing on Memorial Day weekend, but before it does, you can be the first to experience the powerfulness that it is. Ashlee Nicole Spills and History Channel & A+E Studios affiliates have partnered to give you the chance to check out the series before everyone else does.

We all (or some of us) have seen the legendary 1977 series based on the best-selling novel by Alex Haley. Today, HISTORY’s re-creation will bring an inspiring new vision and new life to this powerful story. LeVar Burton, who played Kunta Kinte in the original “ROOTS”, is the Co-Executive Producer of the four-night, eight-hour event series that features an outstanding cast, including Forrest Whitaker (“Fiddler”), Laurence Fishburne (“Alex Haley”), Jonathan Rhys Meyers (“Tom Lea”), Anika Noni Rose (“Kizzy”), Anna Paquin (“Nancy Holt”), Tip T.I. Harris (“Cyrus”), Derek Luke (“Silla Ba Dibba”), and new faces Regé-Jean Page (“Chicken George”) and Malachi Kirby (“Kunta Kinte”).

ROOTS Advance Screening

NIGHT ONE of “ROOTS” begins in 1750 in the port city of Juffure, in the river region of The Gambia in West Africa, where Omoro Kinte and his wife, Binta, have their first child, a son named Kunta. As a member of the highly esteemed Kinte family, Kunta is trained in Mandinka customs and traditions. He is a dedicated student who dreams of traveling to the university in Timbuktu to become a scholar. Kunta passes his warrior training, an important Mandinka rite of passage, but soon after he is betrayed by a rival family and brutally and suddenly his life is forever altered.

“ROOTS” is a historical portrait of American slavery recounting the journey of one family’s will to survive, endure and ultimately carry on their legacy despite enormous hardship and inhumanity. The story of Kunta Kinte and the women and men who came after him echoes through the history of millions of Americans of African descent, and reveals powerful truths about the universal resilience of the human spirit.
